As the blood returns to the heart passes through special thin-walled channels called veins. Unlike strong, tough arteries, these vessels are easily distended. You can demonstrate this by pressing your finger on a vein on back of your hand and watching it swells as the blood builds up behind it. Blood flowing from the head and upper chest flows downward toward the heart. On the other hand, blood coming from the lower extremities must flow upward. To make this possible, nature has provided valves in the veins so that the blood can only flow toward the heart, never in the other direction.

In your legs you have two main sets of veins. The deeper veins are located within the muscles where they are given good support. But the veins on the surface just under the skin have little support and are easily damaged. These surface veins often subject to inflammation or phlebitis.

In some people the veins in the legs are weak and may swell easily. This trouble seems to run in families. Then again anything that increase the pressure in the pelvis or abdomen may slow the flow of blood back to the heart from the lower extremities. One frequent cause of varicose veins is pregnancy, another is obesity. Anything that increase the pressure within the veins of the legs and thighs may weaken or break down the little valves, so that the veins become enlarged and the blood does not find it way back to the heart as it should.

Varicose veins are ugly, and sometimes they are dangerous. A blood clot forming within a greatly dilated vein may break off and travel to the heart and lungs. This serious condition, known as pulmonary embolism, may actually cause death. Serious hemorrhage may occur if a large varicose vein is torn open or cut. Some people have actually bled to death, not knowing what to do in such an emergency. Steady pressure over bleeding point, as usually control the bleeding but one should avoid such a danger by having the vein properly treated or removed.

Signs of Trouble:

A venous ulcer caused by Longstanding Varicose Veins

People with varicose veins first note swelling along the course of the veins, followed by muscle cramps and a tired feeling in the legs behind the knees. In some cases the skin over the lower part of the leg may break down, forming a large, ugly ulcer, which is often painful, especially when thrombophlebitis develops in the leg.

Varicose Veins Treatment:

In most cases surgery is the best treatment, especially when the larger veins of the legs and thighs are involved. Long, tortuous, winding vessels can easily be removed by vein ligation and stripping. Smaller veins can often be successfully treated by injections, but surgery is best for large varicose veins.

To avoid further trouble, one should not wear any elastic bands around the legs, for this will only increase the problem. Special stockings and elastic bondages are useful as a temporary treatment, but they are not comfortable enough for regular use over a long period.

Varicose ulcers need special care. The patient should rest in bed, with the legs elevated so that the heel is higher that the knees. Antibiotic ointments are useful in treating the local cellulitis or inflammation. Also the heating cradle will help to protect the leg from further injury, and the gentle heat will help heal the skin. Some ulcers do better with moist heat, others with dry. Both methods may be tried. Keeping the leg elevated will reduce swelling by helping the blood return to the heart. Large, deep ulcers and badly scarred areas may need a graft of fresh skin over the area before they will heal completely.

Fainting or syncope means temporary loss of consciousness due to lack of oxygen in the brain. The victim suddenly becomes pale and has a feeling of weakness and nausea, then falls to the ground. In most cases, recovery is rapid, often within a minute or two.

Fainting spells frequently follows period of fatigue due to overwork. Standing still for a long time may bring on faintness and dizziness. This may also occur after a person has been in bed for a few days of weeks. Just the simple act of getting up around will bring on feelings of weakness, because the normal balancing mechanisms of the body have not been malfunctioning during the illness. Any sudden emotion shock may cause fainting, probably because many of the smaller blood vessels are relaxed and there is not enough blood to fill them. This result in a rapid drop in blood pressure. Any pressure in the neck, particularly over the carotid arteries, may reduce the flow of blood to the brain and cause fainting or dizziness. This may come on from wearing a tight collar.

Many nervous people suffer from fainting spells, especially at the sight blood. Others become dizzy because of breathing to much air. In their anxiety they feel they are not getting enough air, when in reality they are getting far more than they actually need. This is known as the hyperventilation syndrome, a condition in which there is often fainting and dizziness. Such people should breathing into a paper bag the moment this strange feelings come on. Breathing the same air several times in succession will quickly raise the carbon dioxide level in the metabolism and restore the normal chemical balance of the body.

Treatment for painting:

Keep the patient lying flat with head low and the feet slightly elevated until he regains consciousness this may be all the treatment he needs. However, he should see his doctor to be sure there is nothing more serious. The doctor will want to rule out heart disease, high blood pressure, and other conditions such as diabetes.

People who suffer from fainting spells should avoid extra on hot days. A well-balanced breakfast in the morning, followed by a regular meals at midday and night will help to keep the blood sugar at normal level all through the day. A good program of exercise will help the blood vessels to maintain their normal tone. But all such activities should be done in moderation, especially after some prolonged illness.

A poisonous snake has two needle-sharp fangs or teeth, one each side of the upper jaw. At the root of the fang there is a poison gland. When the snake strikes, it jabs down-ward, hitting the skin with its fang and immediately releasing a few drops of venom. The snake then recoils, and is ready to strike again.

If the fang happens to enter the vein, the poison is quickly carried through the body. Snakes are always more dangerous in the early spring when they crawling out from their winter retreats.

Pain and swelling almost always follow the bite of a poisonous snake. The pain is felt immediately, and the swelling soon follows. The skin become purple in color, and one or two tiny puncture points may be seen in the area where the fang passed through the skin.

What to do:

Tie a tourniquet or ligature around the limb, just above the are of the bite. Use a handkerchief, necktie, shoelace, or other suitable material for this purpose. The tourniquet should be just tight enough to stop the follow of blood in the surface vessels. You can tell whether it is tight enough by observing how much the veins swell just below the ligature. This tight band helps to slow up the absorption of poison.

Keep the victim lying down with the affected limb of little lower than the rest of the body.

Sterilize a sharp knife or razor blade, by passing it through a flame. With the tip of the blade make a number of cuts across the area of the bite, about a quarter of an inch deep, so that the blood will flow freely.

Apply suction to draw out the venom. Do this every few minutes with your mouth. There is no danger if there are no sores or cuts in your mouth. The venom is not poisonous, even if you swallowed. Another good suction method is to heat a small bottle so most of the air has passed out of it. Press the bottle firmly over the area of the wound. As it cools, it will provide suction. Keep the bottle over the area for several minutes.

Take the victim to a doctor as soon as possible. Adjust the tourniquet as outlined this post: Applying a Tourniquet.

If the swelling continues above the ligature, move the band up higher and make a few more cuts along the course of the blood vessel draining that area. Do not put any local medications on the bite. They are of no value in cases like this.

If the victim seems weak or dizzy, give him strong tea or coffee. Never give alcohol. This only spreads the poisons through the body more quickly.

Antivenin. Most countries now provide antivenin to neutralize the poison of the snake. Your doctor will know where too obtain this. Follow the directions carefully. Remember, children require much larger doses than adults. If necessary, inject four or five ampoules of antivenin into the muscle around the area of the bite. It is wise to give some antivenin also in the vein, so that whether the snake poison travels in the body, the antivenin will quickly neutralize its effect.

Tetanus antitoxin should be given to all snake bite victims, at least 3,000 units being injected.

Keep your self calm. Avoid excitement. Keep the victim quiet. With proper care most of these cases seem to make a good recovery.

Snake Bite Prevention:

Snake usually bite in self-defense. Watch where you walk, especially in areas where snake are known to exist. Make sure your feet are well protected by high boots. Young children should be taught the danger of handling snakes and other reptiles. Always be careful to avoid using the bare hands when climbing over rock ledges where snakes may be lurking.

Nose bleeding is very common at any time of life. In children the bleeding comes from some injury to the nose. In elderly people the bleeding may arise from high blood pressure.
Bleeding Nose Treatment:

Keep the patient sitting upright in a comfortable position, with the head held back. Apply steady pressure to the side of the nose that is bleeding. Press on the nostril and hold firmly for at least 12 or 15 minutes. The patient should breath through his mouth during this time. He must not blow his nose. Have some apply cold cloths to the back of the neck or to the face, or both. If the bleeding is heavy and does not stop in a short time, call the doctor. It may be necessary to cauterize the bleeding area. Sometimes a large injection of female hormone, given intravenously, will help to stop the bleeding. In case of the heavy bleeding, it may be necessary to have the nasal passages packed with special gauze to prevent further hemorrhage.
Heres another product available in the market that quick and easy way to stop nosebleeds. Easy to insert nasal packing. Allows nosebleed sufferer to get right back to what they were doing when nosebleed starts. No hiding out in the bathroom, reduces embarrassments and it doesn’t stick to new cloths.
Eyelid Infection Treatments

Styes. More serious infections are best treated by an eye specialist. Meanwhile, amply warm, moist compresses several times a day, treating time. Procedure a saturated solution of boric acid is not readily available. Most in this simple treatment. If not, be sure to see you doctor.

Styes usually go away on their own, just like blemishes on the face do. The best treatment is keep the area as clean as possible, but otherwise leave the style alone. Styes do not usually affect your vision. Consult with your ophthalmologist (Eye M.D.) before using any topical treatments or if the stye leaves behind a pocket of fluid once the inflammation goes away.

About a fourth of chalazia have no symptoms and will also disappear without any treatment. Sometimes, however, a chalazion may become red, swollen and tender. A larger chalazion may also cause blurred vision by distorting the shape of the eye. Occasionally, a chalazion can cause the entire eyelid to swell suddenly.

Symptoms are treated with one or more of the following methods.

Warm compresses, which help clear the clogged gland. Soak a clean washcloth in hot water and apply the cloth to the lid for 10 to 15 minutes, three or four times a day until the chalazion is gone. You should repeatedly soak the cloth in hot water to maintain adequate heat. When the clogged gland opens, you may notice increased discharge from the eye. This should improve.

Antibiotic ointments may be prescribed if bacteria infect the chalazion.

Steroid injections (usually cortisone) are sometimes used to reduce the inflammation of a chalazion.

Surgical removal may be performed if a large chalazion does not respond to other treatments and/or affects vision. The procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia in the office of your ophthalmologist (Eye M.D.).

The new cells form in the lower layers.

They are gradually pushed to the surface as more new cells form beneath them. By the time they reach the surface, the cells have become flat and overlap each other like roof tiles. By then, these cells are dead and are shed from the surface all the time. They are so small that we do not notice this is happening.
With dandruff, this whole process of skin renewal (or skin turnover) speeds up, so a greater number of dead cells are being shed. Also, the cells are shed in clumps, which are big enough to be seen with the naked eye as embarrassing flakes, especially when they land on dark clothing. The scalp may also feel slightly itchy.

Dandruff is very common. According to Proctor and Gamble, it affects more than 50% of the population of the USA – so it is more common to have dandruff than not! It can occur at any age, but is most likely in the early 20s.
