Raspberries: 10 Times Antioxidants than Tomatoes or Broccoli

Raspberries may be small and delicate, but they’re huge when it comes to nutrition, according to study at the Plant Research International center in the Netherlands. Raspberries may have 10 times more antioxidants than tomatoes or broccoli (veggies with reputations as being potent sources of antioxidants). Antioxidants are sub-stances like carotenoids, flavornoids and Vitamin C that protect the body at the cellular level from damage that may lead to cardiovascular diseases, cancer and diabetes.

What even more amazing about these little red fruits is that they contain another extremely rare type of antioxidant. “Approximately 50 percent of the antioxidant effect of raspberries is caused by ellagitannins, every strong antioxidant that also have antimicrobial properties,” explain Jules Beekwilder, Ph.D, author of the study thatappeared in the recent issue of BioFactors. “These are found in very small doses in strawberries and practucally nowhere else.”
Though fresh raspberries are readily available (and less pricey) un summer researchers say you can reap similar benifits from frozen variety, too.
